Colombia celebrates first Wolbachia mosquito release
After almost three years work in the laboratories at PECET, University of Antioquia and extensive engagement with the community, the Eliminate Dengue project in Colombia has celebrated the first release of Wolbachia Aedes aegypti in the suburb of Paris, in the municipality of Bello.
More than 5000 families in Paris have consented to weekly releases of mosquitoes near their homes, for the first trial of the Wolbachia dengue control method in Colombia. The trial has been endorsed by the Ministries of Health and Environment of Antioquia with the approval of the Ethics Committee of the University of Antioquia and the Ministry of Health through the National Institute of Health in Colombia.
