Joining communities for national celebration

As people across Indonesia gathered to celebrate the country’s Independence Day in August, Eliminate Dengue Indonesia joined the communities of Nogotirto and Kronggahan in a ‘Fun Walk’ to mark the occasion.

We appreciated the opportunity to meet with the residents of the two Yogyakarta communities where we released Wolbachia mosquitoes earlier this year. The event drew a large crowd, and our Yogyakarta team took the opportunity to thank the communities for their ongoing support.

“We are thankful for the support and participation of Kronggahan community all this time,” Project Leader Prof Adi Utarini said.

Lead Scientist Dr Riris Andono Ahmad delivered a similar message to the community leaders and people of Nogotirto, adding that the Eliminate Dengue project was committed to continuing to monitor the local mosquito population into the future.

From January to June 2014, we released Wolbachia mosquitoes once a week in areas of Nogotirto and Kronggahan. We are continuing to monitor mosquitoes and we are seeing promising results, with 60-80% of the mosquitoes in our release areas consistently carrying Wolbachia.
