Director General of ICMR Soumya Swaminathan and Eliminate Dengue Program Director Prof. Scott O'Neill reach an agreement to make India the next Eliminate Dengue Project site.
Eliminate Dengue India
The Eliminate Dengue Program is working in partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to investigate the use of self-sustaining Wolbachia bacteria to combat dengue and other mosquito-borne viruses in India. Recurring outbreaks of dengue represent a significant burden for communities and local health systems in the country, and highlight the need for affordable, long-term solutions.
An initial research phase will be conducted at the ICMR’s Vector Control Research Centre (VCRC) in Puducherry, South India, with laboratory studies to examine the impact of Wolbachia on dengue and chikungunya viruses in India.
