Second Wolbachia field trial begins in Vietnam

Residents of Tri Nguyen Island, on the south central coast of Vietnam, have welcomed the community’s second Eliminate Dengue field trial – which began today (May 14, 2014).

With approval from the Ministry of Health and continued community support, Eliminate Dengue Vietnam will undertake weekly releases of mosquitoes that carry the wMel strain of Wolbachia that has successfully established in wild mosquito populations in north Australian communities.

The aim of the field trial is to establish the wMel strain of Wolbachia in the local mosquito population on the island, which we expect will reduce local dengue transmission.

Laboratory results from Vietnam’s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) show that this strain of Wolbachia is suitable for the island’s environment. We will monitor mosquitoes on the island to see how many carry Wolbachia and report the results back to the local community, project collaborators and through our website.
