Community shows support for next trial

With community support and government approval, our next Australian field trial of the Wolbachia dengue control method is beginning this week, in the Cairns suburbs of Stratford and Freshwater.

We have also begun talking with community members in two other Cairns suburbs – Cairns North and Bungalow – where we hope to begin a further field trial in the coming months.

The aim of these trials is to establish Wolbachia in the local mosquito populations, which we expect will reduce local dengue transmission. We will be trialling a range of release methods and strategies, and the results will help us to develop our method for larger-scale trials in Australia and overseas.

Meanwhile, we are continuing to see promising results in our previous field trial sites in Cairns, with Wolbachia sustaining in the local mosquito populations during the recent wet season (November to April).
