Eliminate Dengue Colombia expands field trials into Los Sauces, Maruchenga and Nueva Jerusalén

Eliminate Dengue Colombia is continuing the fight against mosquito-borne viruses in Paris as well as expanding into Los Sauces, Maruchenga and Nueva Jerusalén. In partnership with the community, the team will now be trialling a new method using mosquito eggs. These egg releases will involve a little less than two cups of water, some fish food and approximately 50 Aedes aegypti eggs containing Wolbachia. This new method is part of the Eliminate Dengue Colombia’s commitment to continually refining the method to make it as cost-effective as possible. Marina, a community member who has watched the Eliminate Dengue Colombia entomologists visiting her neighbourhood has said “We are pleased that they are doing this project”.

Releases have started in Nueva Jerusalén and are expected to commence in Los Sauces and Maruchenga in the next few weeks. Elkin Lopez, the Director of Public Health in Bello said “In Bello, we are very concerned with the high rate of dengue infection and therefore are very interested in working with the Eliminate Dengue Program”.
