Awareness raising critical for large scale efficacy study in Yogyakarta city
Dengue is still very much a burden for the people of Yogyakarta. In October this year, the number of dengue cases in Yogyakarta overtook the total number of cases documented in 2015. The growing prevalence of dengue across the city highlights the need for greater public awareness of the virus as well as innovative methods to prevent its transmission.
In 2011, Eliminate Dengue initiated small trials using Wolbachia in the districts of Sleman and Bantul. Promising results from these trials have paved the way for a large scale efficacy study to take place across the city of Yogyakarta. Over the next 2-3 years, the team will introduce mosquitoes with Wolbachia across Yogyakarta city and rigorously evaluate the impact of Wolbachia on the transmission of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
The project is working closely with government, health authorities, and local communities to undertake this study, which will be the first of its kind conducted globally.
