Water level flux in household containers in Vietnam - A key determinant of Aedes aegypti population dynamics.

PLoS ONE 2012 7(7): e39067. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0039067

This paper describes the biology of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in key water storage containers in Tri Nguyen village, located on Hon Mieu Island, Khanh Hoa province, in central Vietnam. Despite the relative lack of rainfall during the dry season there were enough water filling events in these containers to support hatching of the desiccation-resistant eggs of Ae. aegypti. Overall, this suggests that if wMelPop-CLA transinfected Ae. aegypti are released in Tri Nguyen village, there will be sufficient water filling events from everyday householder behaviours to ensure survival of the wMelPop-CLA Ae. aegypti through the dry season.
